Risk Factors

Family history represents one of the largest factors of risk for blood pressure. Age comes close, as blood vessels become inflexible in the natural course of aging. A sedentary lifestyle, without much activity either in the workplace or at home, increases the risk of high blood pressure, and along with it obesity, heart disease, and stroke. A diet high in salt and excessive alcohol consumption can also result in high blood pressure.
